CHIME23 Fall Forum was all about keeping up with changes in the healthcare industry: from changing workforce demands, to patient needs, to changing the way patient care is delivered by incorporating artificial intelligence into patient care strategies.

The ROI Healthcare Solutions focus group discussions also reflected change – changes CIOs need to consider to better manage the tools and technologies required by today’s advanced technical environment.

Insights from ROI’s Focus Group at CHIME Fall Forum 2023

Here are some insights from our time together.  See if your organization is experiencing the same trends:

• Tech leaders, especially new CIOs, need to better understand the portfolio of applications used across the enterprise, closely manage renewal dates and fees, consolidate where possible, and sunset older systems that are only being used to store historical data. Archival strategies are key.
• Governance over applications introduced into an organization needs to be centralized with processes and approvals required to purchase and implement ANY technology solutions. This will reduce security and intrusion risks, reduce license and maintenance fees,  and help eliminate redundant applications. It also works towards standardizing processes across the health system, which is integral for organizations growing through mergers and acquisitions.
• Invest in and leverage interfaces that move data between applications. Enabling leading practices in healthcare systems starts with eliminating manual data movement.  Utilize standard interface protocols, and where possible, incorporate EDI and data standardization to facilitate ease of data movement across platforms.

These actions have long been desired and are goals for many technology projects during implementation. But old habits die hard and sometimes, people fall back on manual, disjointed ways just to get to “go live.”  In the absence of change, chaos remains.  Healthcare matures, and innovations are discovered through change.  The pace of change will only get faster with the introduction of AI technologies. Key changes can drastically reduce expenses and give people back the gift of time.  And who doesn’t like a gift now and then?
